LAHORE: Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi will assume the role of president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in January 2025.
The decision was confirmed during an ACC meeting held in Bali. Naqvi’s appointment follows a rotational system among member countries of the ACC.

Current ACC President Jay Shah, who also serves as Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was been granted a one-year extension to his term. Shah’s extended tenure will end in January 2025, paving the way for Naqvi to take over the presidency for a two-year term.
Naqvi, who also holds the position of Pakistan’s Interior Minister, will manage both roles simultaneously. This has prompted some criticism, with former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi questioning Naqvi’s ability to effectively handle the cricketing responsibilities given his multiple positions.
The Pakistani national cricket team, which recently exited the T20 World Cup 2024 in the first round, is now preparing for the Asia Cup 2024. Reports suggest that the Indian team may not travel to Pakistan for the tournament, which could impact the competition’s logistics.
Looking ahead, India is scheduled to host the Men’s Asia Cup 2025, with matches to be played in the T20 format. Bangladesh will host the 2027 edition in the ODI format. Each tournament will feature six teams: Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and a sixth team to be determined through a qualifying event.
The precise schedule for the Men’s Asia Cup 2025 is still pending, but it is expected to take place in September, following the end of the monsoon season in India.
Naqvi’s appointment as ACC president will be formally confirmed at the next ACC meeting, expected to take place between October and November.

In his capacity as PCB Chairman, Naqvi has restructured administrative duties within the board. Former Pakistan cricket captain Waqar Younis was selected to serve as an advisor on cricket-related matters, overseeing international and domestic cricket, player selections, and no objection certificates (NOCs).
The PCB Constitution of 2014 permits the Chairman to delegate responsibilities, allowing Naqvi to focus on broader administrative issues while Younis handles specific cricketing affairs.
