In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh witnessed the end of Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule as prime minister amidst violent civil disobedience protests. Following the government’s fall, national cricket team captain and Member of Parliament, Shakib Al Hasan, has gone missing, raising concerns about his safety and whereabouts.
Onlookers reported that protesters set fire to the home of former cricket captain and fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza. Both Mashrafe and Shakib were elected to the National Assembly on the Awami League ticket, Sheikh Hasina’s party.
“Protesters attacked homes of Awami League MPs across Bangladesh, sparing none,” said a witness in Dhaka. “Mashrafe Mortaza’s house was torched, but thankfully, he and his family had already moved to a safer location.” Police attempted to prevent the arson, but the chaos proved overwhelming.
Protesters previously set fire to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s private residence, a significant symbol of the Awami League, along with the party’s central headquarters.
Mashrafe Mortaza managed to relocate with his family before the attack on his home. “We took measures to safeguard Mashrafe, but the anger of the crowd was too intense,” admitted a police spokesperson.
Earlier this year, in January, Shakib Al Hasan was elected to Parliament as an Awami League representative. However, in light of the current upheaval, his sudden disappearance has sparked widespread concern and speculation. The situation remains tense as the country grapples with the aftermath of Sheikh Hasina’s ousting and the instability that follows.
