Vinesh Phogat had been competing in the 50 kg category when she disqualified after a weigh-in revealed she was 100 grams over the limit. The disqualification moved her to the last position in the standings, effectively ending her bid for gold.
The wrestler had previously defeated Cuba’s Yuznelis Guzman in the semi-finals and was set to face America’s Sarah Hildebrand in the final.
Reports indicate that Phogat’s weight was within the limit before the competition. However, on Tuesday night, she was found to be nearly 2 kg over the limit.
Despite efforts throughout the night to lose weight through jogging, skipping, and cycling, she could not meet the required weight by the morning weigh-in.
The Indian Olympic Association confirmed her disqualification at 8:30 am Paris time.
In response to the disqualification, Phogat filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking the silver medal. She argued that her initial weight gain was justified and should not have resulted in disqualification.
The court is scheduled to review her appeal and make a decision on the matter today.
