PARIS: On the eighth day of medal competition at the Paris Olympics, China sustained its top position.

The Asian giant is leading the medal tally with a total of 16 gold medals. Meanwhile, the United States (US) follows in second place with 14 gold medals after strong performances from its athletes on Saturday.

In the women’s badminton event, the Chinese duo secured the gold medal by defeating fellow compatriots in the final. Tennis saw notable achievements as China’s Zeng Qinwen claimed the gold in women’s singles, overcoming Croatia’s Donna Vecic.

While the men’s doubles tennis gold went to an Australian pair, South Korea’s Jin Yang triumphed in the 25m women’s pistol shooting event, while the Netherlands’ Florjan Caroline won gold in the women’s rowing single sculls.

The men’s rowing single sculls gold was captured by Germany’s Zelder Oliver.

In other events, Germany secured a gold medal in the equestrian dressage team grand prix, Belgium took the men’s road cycling gold, and Italy won in the women’s windsurfing sailing event. Israel’s windsurfing team secured the men’s gold.

In archery, South Korea won the gold medal. In gymnastics, the Philippines triumphed in the men’s floor exercise, while the US’s Simone Biles won the women’s vault final. Ireland’s gold came in the men’s pommel horse event.

The US also excelled in shooting, with a gold in the men’s skate final, and Katie Ledecky won the women’s 800m freestyle in swimming.

The mixed team judo event saw France defeat Japan 4-3 to claim gold, and Ukraine won the women’s saber team gold in fencing.

In athletics, Ryan Crouser of the US achieved his third consecutive Olympic gold in men’s shot put. Dominica’s Thea LaFond won the women’s triple jump, marking the country’s first Olympic medal. Saint Lucia’s Julian Alfred won the women’s 100m, the nation’s inaugural Olympic medal.

Hungary’s Kristof Malak secured gold in the men’s 100m butterfly, while the Netherlands won the mixed 4x400m relay. Canada’s Perak Summer Mackintosh achieved gold in the women’s 200m individual medley. The US also set a new world record in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.
