Pakistan hines in World Junior Team Squash Championship

HOUSTON: Pakistan marked a triumphant debut in the World Junior Team Squash Championship by defeating Germany 2-1 in the initial match of the team championship held in Houston.

Abdullah Nawaz and Huzaifa Ibrahim emerged victorious in their respective matches.

Abdullah Nawaz defeated Oscar Hecker with a scoreline of 7-11, 2-11, and 4-11. Similarly, Huzaifa Ibrahim overcame Fabian Agelbrück with a score of 1-11, 9-11, and 8-11.

However, the tournament took an unexpected turn when Hamza Khan retired due to an undisclosed reason. Despite winning the first game against Finn Lennart, Hamza Khan was defeated in the subsequent game and decided to retire from the match.

The team is scheduled to compete in their second group match against New Zealand, further showcasing their talent and determination on the international stage.

The World Junior Team Squash Championship 2024 began on Thursday (today) with a total of 42 teams participating. 25 teams are competing in the men’s category, and 17 in the women’s category.

For the men’s matches, teams were grouped into eight pools, with the top two teams from each pool progressing to the last 16 stage.

Meanwhile, the women’s event consists of four pools. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarter-finals.

During the pool stage of the tournament, all three matches between teams will be played. In the knockout rounds, if a team has already won two out of the three matches in a tie, they can choose whether to play the third match or opt out of playing it.

The tournament is scheduled to take place at the Houston Squash Club in state of Texas. It will run from July 12 till July 23.
