ISLAMABAD: Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi, formerly associated with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has withdrawn a resolution that had sought to ban all social media networks.
The resolution had said that the social media was creating negative effects on the youth.
Senator Tangi moved a resolution in the Senate earlier seeking a ban on major social media platforms such as Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
He had argued that these platforms were adversely affecting the young generation, religion, and culture of the country, and spreading hatred and fake news.
He had also claimed that these platforms were being used against the interests and integrity of the country and the armed forces by propagating negative and malicious propaganda.
He had urged the government to put a ban on these platforms to save the young generation from their negative and devastating effects.
However, the resolution faced strong opposition from other parties and civil society groups, who denounced it as an attempt to curb freedom of expression and access to information.
Earlier, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had warned against the ban, saying that it would violate the constitutional rights of the citizens and undermine the democratic process.
The PPP had also distanced itself from the resolution, saying that it had no relation to it and that it had terminated the basic membership of Senator Tangi for violating the party policy and discipline. The resolution was not taken up by the Senate and was eventually withdrawn by Senator Tangi.
