LAHORE:
An organisation dedicated to wildlife conservation and awareness has initiated a search for wild cats and musk cats (locally known as Mushk Billa) in the villages near the Ravi River in Lahore.
The search, led by Fahad Malik, head of the Awareness Foundation, aims to directly observe and document these elusive animals.
Fahad Malik has been attempting to photograph and record images of wildcats and musk cats in the areas adjacent to the Ravi River for several months, but without success. He explained that conversations with local villagers suggest that these animals may be on the verge of extinction in the region.
The locals noted a decline in chicken rearing, as most village houses are now constructed with brick, making it less common for families to keep chickens due to the mess they create. This shift has seemingly reduced the presence of wild cats and musk cats, which were once frequent visitors to the area.
According to Malik, a few years ago, it was common to hear about cats taking chickens from local households, causing a ruckus.
The musk cat, described by villagers as a small weasel-like animal with leopard-like spots, was particularly known for attacking chickens.
