Searchlight Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” a biopic of Bob Dylan directed by James Mangold. The film, set in the early days of Dylan’s career, explores the vibrant 1960s New York folk scene. Timothée Chalamet stars as Bob Dylan, with Edward Norton playing Pete Seeger, who serves as a framing device in the trailer. The trailer features Dylan performing “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” from his 1963 album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”
The movie hints at a love triangle involving Dylan, his onetime girlfriend Suze Rotolo, and folk legend Joan Baez, portrayed by Monica Barbaro. While Rotolo is not directly depicted, Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, a fictional character representing Rotolo. This creative choice acknowledges Rotolo’s influence without directly portraying her, given her discomfort with being defined by her relationship with Dylan.
The film covers a pivotal period in Dylan’s life, detailing his rise to fame as a folk singer and his controversial shift to rock music at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. This era includes Dylan’s tumultuous relationship with Rotolo, who inspired many of his early songs. Despite their breakup, Rotolo’s influence on Dylan’s music and public persona remains significant.
In “A Complete Unknown,” audiences will see Dylan’s transformation from a 19-year-old Minnesota musician to a global icon. The film captures his journey from performing in small venues to becoming a sensation in concert halls and on the charts, culminating in his groundbreaking electric performance at Newport.
The cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, and Scoot McNairy. “A Complete Unknown” will be released in theaters this December.
